I see the awakening journey as the journey Back to Life. Waking up from the hypnotic trance of “being thunk” into the sometimes ecstatic, but mostly just plain ordinary moments of Being Lived.
What most of us struggle for is to simply just get back to life. It’s like we locked ourselves out of the Garden of Eden and have forgotten how to get back into it, forgetting we locked ourselves out and the key to turn is inside of us.
We look in all the wrong places. We look and try to manipulate the movie of our lives. This yields some successes but mostly failures. Ultimately we wind up with the same gnawing dissatisfaction inside. That yearning to be whole.
The quickest way back to life is to fully face the Unknown. That’s the reason times of crisis are huge opportunities for transformation, when surrender isn’t one of many options, it’s actually the only option left and has been chosen for us.
You see we’ve been reckless with our life force. We’ve spent it in “all the wrong places” and now it’s “stuck” in those places and it’s our job now to call it home, to reclaim it. The good news is that we don’t have to go looking for it in the movie, it comes looking for us each moment of our lives.
Your spiritual path is completely and utterly personalised for YOU. Where is it? It is the very life you are living right now. The life force that is coming back home to you in this moment is presenting itself to you via the situations that you are resisting in your life. Via the churning in your stomach, the aches in your heart. These are all signs of the life force and where it is knocking at that door to get back in. Unfortunately, we ignore this most blessed and treasured of visitors. We turn away to keep looking elsewhere.
Today, simply take a moment to see where life is knocking at your door, knocking to be allowed back in, to return you to the Garden of Eden. You turn the key with your Presence, your full, unlabelled, uninterpreted Presence. If a visitor was to arrive at your door holding all you’ve ever searched for and wanted, would you let them in? Would you not embrace them and weep with gratitude for getting your life back?
That’s the opportunity that you have in EACH AND EVERY MOMENT.
No one describes this better than Rumi:
The Guest House
This being human is a guest house.
Every morning a new arrival.
A joy, a depression, a meanness,
some momentary awareness comes
as an unexpected visitor.
Welcome and entertain them all!
Even if they are a crowd of sorrows,
who violently sweep your house
empty of its furniture,
still, treat each guest honorably.
He may be clearing you out
for some new delight.
The dark thought, the shame, the malice.
meet them at the door laughing and invite them in.
Be grateful for whatever comes.
because each has been sent
as a guide from beyond.
— Jellaludin Rumi
You see each of these visitors is carrying a piece of life force that you lost or gave away at some point on your life path. Something you resisted and locked out of the Garden. Before long there is more of you locked out than there is inside. I believe in some cultures this is called “soul retrieval”, I see it simply as getting your life force back.
So settle back into your armchair and see if you are willing to answer the next knock on your door, remembering it’s exactly what you ordered, it’s tailor-made for you and it’s the next piece of your unique puzzle that you have prayed for and that you have the capacity to accept and integrate.
What are you waiting for?
